The Value of Communication PDF Print E-mail

In business, we are told, time is money. Like most clichés it contains a strong element of truth, but that doesn’t mean we take full cognizance of it. One area of particular fascination to me is that of communication. It appears to me to be vital to develop a mastery of communication if we are to ensure that our time is truly used in the most profitable manner.

Many studies show that some 93% of our communication is non-verbal. Thus our appearance and body language act like constant mobile billboards. It is easy to assume that others see us as we see ourselves, but just as the eyes quite literally see largely what they expect to see, so others view us through largely through the filters of their own experiences. Learning to consciously present a visual image which is in harmony with our occupation, and with our intended message, is a skill worth cultivating. Identifying the appropriate body language to ensure that our message is communicated in a confident and calm manner adds immeasurably to that.

This brings us to the actual words we use, and some key questions. What exactly is our message? Who do we wish to communicate it to? How do we want them to respond? That we have a thorough knowledge of our product/service is merely a starting point. Unless we have some reasonable understanding of the personalities and communication styles of our audience/prospective customers, we stand a very good chance of missing out on significant numbers of sales. Using a system such as DISC, GEMS, or my own speciality Face Reading, gives us an edge by providing insights into the potential strengths and weaknesses of the individual. These systems also provide clear information as to not just how our contacts communicate, but most importantly, how they like to be communicated with. Are they more dominant, assertive types? Do they need all the details, or just a broad outline? Are they more intuitive? Do they respond more to emotions than logic?

We are living in challenging times. Many businesses are struggling, and many have already closed. Those of us who wish to not simply stay in business, but thrive, would be well advised to look at all aspects of our message to ensure that our time is used to make, and not lose money. Have fun learning.
